ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores connection within and to land and the natural world through working with natural materials that are impermanent and degradable. The pigments I work with are collected from the soil or made with burnt wood.
I wash away paintings and reuse the surfaces that hold echoes of past paintings. This way I am not just creating a more sustainable practice, but building landscapes with layers of history in each work.
I am also drawn to the visual language of nature's patterns, and the symbols left behind by prehistoric people who lived with the land, symbols we describe as abstract because we don't have the context to read them.
